Many residents in the Southern part of Coto de Caza have been wondering what is being built adjacent to the community. The large project on the Southern border of Coto de Caza is the Canada Gobernadora Multipurpose Basin. The creek that runs thru Coto de Caza is formally known as Gobernadora Creek and the basin is designed to capture the water that flows thru the creek and use it for irrigation in the community. It is estimated that between 350 and 700 acre feet of water will be recycled annually. The creek is considered a major tributary of San Juan Creek and the basin will also reduce erosion and improve water quality of that creek. The cost of the two phases of this project which will be operated by the Santa Margarita Water District will exceed $18,000,000. The final basin is designed to look like a natural wetland similar to the one just North of South Bend adjacent to the Coto de Caza Golf and Racquet Clubs South Course.
