Temecula

Temecula is a city of just over 100,000 located in southwestern Riverside County California.  It borders Murrieta, San Diego County and the Pachanga Indian Reservation.  It is conveniently located 60 miles from both San Diego and Orange County and 90 miles from Los Angeles.  It is believed that the name is derived from Native American and means “where the sun breaks thru the mist”.  Spanish settlers led by a Franciscan padre arrived in the Temecula Valley in the late 1700’s.  In the 1800’s the valley was divided into 4 ranchos under the Mexican land grants.  During the Mexican American war between 30-40 native Americans were killed in what became known as the Temecula massacre.  After the war the Butterfield Overland Stage was routed thru the community and that led to the opening of California’s second post office in the fledgling town.  In recent years, companies such as Abbott Labs, Professional Hospital Supply and the Pachanga Hotel and Casino have located here bringing thousands of jobs.  Wine grapes have been an integral part of the community for centuries, but in recent years the industry has blossomed and there are now over 50 wineries with more opening on a regular basis.  The heart of the community continues to be the authentic Old Town Front Street with its wooden side walks, original western buildings and full calendar of events.  Temecula is ideally situated to take advantage of everything that Southern California has to offer.
